Civil Rights · Post-Reconstruction Fiction

The Colonel's Dream

A Northern colonel returns to the Southern town of his childhood intending to rebuild it, and finds convict leasing, debt peonage and a social order that will accept his money and nothing else. Chesnutt’s last published novel, and his bleakest: the reforms fail one by one, not through villainy but through the ordinary preferences of decent people. It sold worse than The Marrow of Tradition and he published no more fiction.
