Frederick Douglass: A Biography

Chesnutt’s life of Douglass, written four years after Douglass died and while most of the people in it were still alive. It is a short book with a particular vantage: one Black writer taking the measure of the man who had made such a career conceivable, at the moment when the rights Douglass won were being stripped back across the South. Pairs directly with the Douglass oration already on these shelves.
