The House Behind the Cedars
Chesnutt's first novel, and the one he worked at longest. Rena Walden follows her brother out of the Black South and into a white life in Carolina society; the book is about what that costs, what it requires her to abandon, and how little the distinction rested on anything but agreement. Written while Chesnutt was still supporting himself as a legal stenographer, and published the year he gave that up to write full time.
