The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color Line
Nine stories about the people the American racial order could not classify: those light enough to pass, those who chose not to, and those whose place depended entirely on who was asking. The title story turns on a man about to marry into Cleveland society when the wife he was sold away from twenty-five years earlier finds him. Chesnutt published it the same year as The Conjure Woman and it sold far worse, which he attributed correctly to its refusal to be reassuring.
