Two Treatises of Government
The first treatise demolishes the divine right of kings; the second builds the replacement — government as a trust held by consent, legitimate only while it secures life, liberty and property, and dissolvable by the governed when it does not. Jefferson’s debt to it in the Declaration is close enough to be traced line by line, and both documents now sit on these shelves.
