2026 COLEMAN RESEARCH INNOVATION AWARDEES
Roy Choudhury Sourav, Ph.D.
National Institute on Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases
Project Title: A Machine Learning Approach Examining the Role of Social Risk Factors in Predicting Maternal Weight Gain and Metabolic Risk in the ETCHED Pregnancy Cohort
Description of Project: This study leverages the ongoing longitudinal observational life-course study, Early Tracking of Childhood Health Determinants (ETCHED), to identify predictors of excessive gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention in a cohort of Hispanic and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women and their offspring, that is at a high-risk for obesity and metabolic dysfunction. Machine learning approaches will integrate social risk factors with clinical and metabolic data to develop risk-prediction models across pregnancy and postpartum periods. By identifying novel, modifiable risk factors, this study aims to guide future interventions to improve maternal metabolic health and ultimately reduce health disparities and disrupt the intergenerational cycle of obesity.
Bethany Stangl, Ph.D.
National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism
Project Title : Examination of Estrogen Regulation Pathways in Postmenopausal Women with Alcohol Use Disorder
Description of Project : The study investigates how chronic alcohol use may alter estrogen signaling and DNA methylation in postmenopausal women. The research aims to identify alcohol-related and context driven differences in estrogen-related pathways by comparing DNA methylation profiles, sex hormone levels, and measures of stress, and socioeconomic status in postmenopausal women with and without alcohol use disorder. The findings will help clarify how alcohol, stress and socioeconomic status interact to influence cancer risk.
Deborah Rose, M.D.
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke
Project Title : Characterizing Profiles of Cognition, Functional Health, and Neurodegeneration Plasma Biomarkers in Midlife Adults
Description of Project : Cognitive decline and dementia disproportionately affect people with lower socioeconomic status. Integrated, data-driven phenotypes combining cognitive performance, functional health, and neurodegeneration biomarker indicaters are needed to reflect clinical reality and guide earlier, more personalized interventions. This project aims to derive clinically meaningful cognitive aging phenotypic profiles among midlife adults in CARDIA study considering socioeconomic status. The study is expected to yield multidimensional cognitive aging profiles of cognitive performance, functional status, and AD/N biomarker levels that mirror clinical observations.
Kauthrah Ntabadde, M.D., M.P.H.
Project Title : Detecting Subclinical Cardiovascular Disease Across Populations: A Comparative Analysis
Description of Project : Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. Due to critical gaps in existing data, this project will compare subclinical biomarkers of cardiac stress and injury in African Immigrants and African Americans as well as examine variation by glucose tolerance status, as diabetes is a key driver of cardiovascular disease. It is anticipated that with the foundation built from this investigation, risk stratification, precise screening and improved prevention strategies will be achieved across populations.
Hyun Song, Ph.D.
Project Title : Associations Between Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status, Inflammation, and Brain Heath in Aging Adults
Description of Project : Neighborhood socioeconomic status has been associated with cognitive impairment and dementia in old age. This study examines associations between life-course neighborhood-level socioeconomic exposures and dementia risk and evaluates a potential biological pathway linking neighborhood socioeconomic status to dementia risk using data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. The findings will advance understanding of community-level socioeconomic influences on biological pathways and may inform context-specific interventions.
Rupsha Singh, Ph.D.
National Institutes of Environmental Health Services
Project Title : Religion, Spirituality, along with Complementary and Alternative Medicine Practices in Relation to Cardiometabolic Health among U.S. female adults: A Whole Person Health Approach
Description of Project : Sleep is a fundamental component of cardiometabolic health, and female adults experience higher cardiometabolic disease risk due to both poor sleep and adverse cardiometabolic health. Religion and/or spirituality, along with complementary and alternative medicine, can shape cardiometabolic health outcomes through pathways such as stress regulation, coping resources, daily routines, and health behaviors including sleep. This project leverages three studies to examine associations between these practices and cardiometabolic biomarkers and outcomes to inform future whole person health interventions to improve cardiometabolic health among female adults.
Sharonda Lovett, Ph.D.
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
Project Title : Quantifying sociodemographic and geographic disparities in the effect of extreme heat on menopause
Description of Project : Extreme heat events are occurring with increasing frequency in the US. Adverse health effects have been linked to extreme heat exposure, but no studies have evaluated its effect on age at menopause (a vital sign for women’s health and aging). The team will leverage data from the Sister study to derive metrics of recent and longer-term extreme heat exposure using daily ambient temperatures and relative humidity. The study aims to advance health disparities research by identifying individual and neighborhood level factors that may mitigate any adverse effects of extreme heat on menopausal timing.
Maya Spaur, Ph.D., Sc. M.
National Cancer Institute
Project Title: Disparities in Drinking Water Exposures and Cancer Incidence in 3 U.S. Cohorts
Description of Project: Exposure to drinking water contaminants that are known or suspected carcinogens in the U.S. vary across geographic regions. Socioeconomic, racial and/or ethnic, and regional disparities in kidney, ovarian, uterine, and prostate cancer incidence and mortality persist despite improvements in cancer screening and treatment. The study team aims to investigate disparities in drinking water contaminant exposures by socioeconomic status, race and/or ethnicity, rurality/urbanicity, and geographic region in three cohorts. Ultimately, the study will be used for understanding environmental factors that contribute to cancer health disparities, and to test population-level interventions to reduce these disparities.

The NIMHD 10 th Anniversary Scientific Symposium: Innovations to Promote Health Equity will showcase the latest discoveries in minority health and health disparities research. Join us for a day of new insights, dynamic discussions and a look toward the future.
Recent news coverage on topics such as maternal mortality, medication ineffectiveness, vaping, and diet-related cancers reflect both the acknowledgement of disparities in health and health care, and the urgent need to ensure all populations are fully engaged in biomedical research. Leading researchers investigating these and other salient topics will help crystalize and further explore our current knowledge about the determinants of health and their impact on minority health and health disparities. Audience members will engage with panelists to help identify research opportunities and optimal strategies for reducing health disparities among racial/ethnic minorities, persons of disadvantaged socioeconomic status, sexual and gender minorities, and underserved rural residents.
The symposium will feature four panels focused on:
- Multidisciplinary Intramural Research at NIMHD
The symposium will close with remarks on future directions for ensuring all populations have an equal opportunity to live long, healthy, and productive lives.
The symposium will be available on NIH Videocast and archived for those unable to attend in person.
Join the social media conversation using #NIMHD2020 and #Innovate4HealthEquity.
